About Katie Dobrow

Kaitlyn Dobrow is 18 years young and she loves to have a good time with her friends! She loves to sleep, work hard and earn money, boxing, hanging out with friends and many other things. She loves life to its fullest and is always there for others and me no matter what the situation is. Her personality is one of the most amazing ones I have ever seen. Katie is the type of person who gives so much but doesn't expect others to give back. Even if she doesn’t know you, she would stand up for you no matter what. Kaitlyn is just so special to me personally and to many others as well. Whenever she walked into a room she always brightened it with her laugh and smile. There will always be something special about her. Kaitlyn is a miracle and here is her journey so far. Unfortunately, bad things tend to happen to the most wonderful people. Kaitlyn wasn't feeling very well one evening. According to her mother she got home and went to bed around 1:00 a.m. on February 12, 2013. Between 9:00 and 9:30 am that morning, she woke up and told her mother that she had a horrible headache and her entire body was in pain. Her mother assumed it was the flu and so did I. Her mom gave her some Advil and she went back to bed. The Advil provided no relief, and by 2:30 or 3:00 pm that afternoon, she was unable to get out of bed. This is when the paramedics took her to the ER.
There, she was diagnosed with Meningococcemia and she was admitted to the ICU. For the next week, her condition worsened, and her parents, family and friends were so afraid they going to lose her. Thankfully, our hero, Katie survived. I am so glad she did because I wouldn't know what to do if she didn’t. For over a month she has been in ICU needing several surgeries with still more to come. Throughout this whole situation she has become a stronger person within herself. Kaitlyn’s friends, family and those who don't even know her have been her lifeline and support! They are donating through a Fundraising site called Kaitlyn Dobrow Inspires Hope!! She has touched many hearts all around the world. She is the one who has become the hero. Katie has inspired us all. Her mother and father have been through hell and back; yet they remain strong and hopeful. That's where I know Kaitlyn gets her strength from. Due her illness Kaitlyn had to have her arms and left arm amputated at the shoulder and right arm amputated at the elbow. Both her legs were amputated at the knee. Her beautiful smile continues because she knows something good will come out of this. She has such high spirits and its simply amazing. A little about this disease: 
Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial illness. It is spread through the exchange of respiratory and throat secretions. This can occur when people live or sleep in close contact or through kissing. Teens and young adults have a higher risk for meningococcal disease.

From Brother Ian

March 21st 2013:I wanted to share a message from Kaitlyn's brother Ian. It is very moving and I thought everyone would want to hear what this experience has been like for him:

To everyone who has already donated, I want to say thank you. These two simple words are woefully inadequate in expressing how grateful my family and I truly are, but there are no sentiments that can be expressed through simple words to show the depths of our love for each and every one of you. This ordeal has been incredibly hard on all of us, and yet Katie seems to be the strongest of us all. That's probably for the best, considering what she's going through.

My parents tell me that I was the sweetest boy they had ever known when I was younger. As the years went on and I started to see the rot that infects this world, I grew more cynical and cold toward everything and everyone. People were simplistic creatures following their base instincts rather than rising to the level of intelligence they truly possess.

When I heard about good deeds, it was always an isolated case in my mind. The few people that humanity could still be proud of were receiving recognition for their actions. However, this tragedy that has happened has opened my eyes.

The torrent of love my family is receiving from all sides has shattered my misconceptions regarding humanity's fundamental state of being. So many people have donated staggering amounts of money to aid my family in its time of need. There are many people that have never even met Katie or our family at all, and yet they freely give away their hard earned money that could make their lives a little better.

So to reiterate former sentiments--THANK YOU. All of you have restored my faith in humanity. My family and I love you all.

Here is a sweet picture of Kaitlyn and her mom Kathi, dad Don, and brother Ian. 

Kaitlyn Dobrow was taken into surgery 2 1/2 hours later than expected - 5:30 instead of 3:00, so she got out of surgery just a little while ago. Everything went very well, and she's doing fine according to her doctor. We haven't seen her yet but will soon. She had grafting done to approximately 1/4 of the necessary area on her left side. The remainder of the areas on both the right and left sides to be grafted will be done a little bit at a time, so she will still require several more surgeries. Her doctor said her wounds look very clean with no infection, which is awesome news.

Surgery to her right arm has been postponed until Friday, so no firm decision was made regarding the amputation revision today. Please keep praying that she will be able to keep her elbow.

March 26 2013:

Kaitlyn Dobrow was finally able to have a conversation with her family today!!! It was beautiful music to their ears. What a sweetheart. One of her doctors came into her room just to hear her talk, since he met her after she was intubated and had never heard her voice.  He left with a big smile on his face. Katie had wound care the past  view days and so she was heavily sedated now. She did get a good night's sleep.
